Quite fitting that Dan Ricciardo was also a Chief of Optimism. And selflessness and courage.
Nice guys do finish first!
Aside from his obvious skills behind the wheel of a Formula 1 car, he could also be “Chief of Humility”. Or “Having Fun While Delivering High Performance”. Selflessness is another attribute that Dan actively demonstrated.
His career so far has seen the highest of highs as part of Redbull Racing. Then some difficult years with Renault and McLaren.
And through it all, the trademark toothy smile of a true larrikin. What’s more, he always took responsibility for the shortcomings, and elevated the support teams with each podium finish.
Truly selfless.
Selflessness takes Courage. They are two of our Access Mining values and we see them in action every day. Without them both, you can’t build resilience for the tough times. You also can’t fully enjoy the success if you’re celebrating on your own!
Putting the Team first is how we innovate towards repeatable wins.
Underground mining is a lot like the flashy world of Formula 1 (we like to think so anyway). But in all seriousness, high-tech expensive machinery, high performing environments can lead to stressful situations.
It’s those environments that are real tests of character. We get to see the best and worst of people. Understanding that everyone reacts differently to pressure can help lift team members. And knowing that setbacks can be chances to learn, will help teams find solutions. Mistakes don’t have to be repeated if we have a culture that acknowledges them, owns them, and learns to improve from them.
Not forgetting to have fun along the way. There are not too many arenas where the expectations are so high, the mistakes so costly, and poor results so public than F1. Daniel Ricciardo will be remembered for mixing it with the best, have fun doing it, and still show his human side.
May he have many more years of making great memories for us all.
Thanks for being one of the nice guys!
